What are Hydrophilic Catheters?

How Does a Hydrophilic Catheter Work?

Hydrophilic-coated catheter supplies are covered in a pre-lubricated layer stuck to the catheter surface. When the pre-lubricated coating binds water to the catheter, it appears to have a more slippery surface. When inserting the catheter into the urethra, the hydrophilic coating stays slick, ensuring lubrication throughout the process.

Using a Hydrophilic Catheter for the First Time 

Before using your hydrophilic catheter, you will want to know the necessary steps to activate the catheter. Your hydrophilic catheter will either contain a sterile saline solution in the package or a separate foil packet. If the catheter contains a packet, you must release the hydrophilic properties to activate the catheter. To burst the hydrophilic solution, unfold the package, then fold the water packet about halfway. Apply pressure with your thumb and forefinger and the solution will release. To ensure that all of the solution has been released, wait around 30 seconds for optimal hydration.
